Raising a Chao: For Dummies
Introduction: Welcome to the laymen’s version of raising a Chao. First off, I want to thank all the different FAQ pages on www.gamefaqs.com; it’s where I go to get help when I get stuck. So for a more in-depth look at Chao raising, go there. The reason why I’m doing this is because I found raising a Chao to be EXTREMELY difficult, and it took a long time to perfect the process. So read up, and enjoy!
FAQS: Why raise a Chao? Well, the only way to totally beat Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is to raise a Chao. In Sonic ADX, you can race your Chao in a series of races to gain the last emblems, and In Sonic A2B, you have races and karate fighting to gain the last 8 emblems. Plus, bragging rights ;-)
Why do I need a tutorial for this? Just feed and give animals, right? WRONG. For Sonic ADX, sure you could probably take a run of the mill Chao and raise it to lvl 99 in all areas and beat the races, it’s what I did, BUT in Sonic A2B, your average Chao won’t cut it. A normal Chao will have max stats of around 1800 (if your lucky), and in order to beat the last races (the hero and dark races) you need to have your stats at 2500+ in each area. And this guide shows you how to get there.
How long will this take? For SADX, probably about 13 hours, give or take. For SA2B, I’d say about….50? Possibly more. And I know, you’re probably going O.O but I’m serious. Luckily, a lot of it you don’t have to be around (meaning you can watch some TV while the gamecube runs). So actual game play, probably more around 20ish.
BASICS OF CHAO RAISING: Okay, chaos are those cute little blue things with the hovering ball above them. A Chao has a life cycle that varies, depending on how well you treat it and such, but is around 14-18 hours. After about four hours, it will go through its evolution (which is an important concept, but will be discussed later). After it evolves, chaos can go into mating season (but it’s easier to just give them heart fruit to get them to mate. Mating is another big concept in raising your Chao). Chao eat fruit, and can “absorb” animals so to say, to gain stats (also chaos drives in SA2B). Chao have 5 stat areas, Swimming, Flying, Running, Power, and Stamina. Each area also has a grade level, ranging from E-A, and the top grade, S. The only way to increase a grade to a higher one is by setting him on an evolutionary path. Stamina can only be increased by feeding the Chao fruits when it’s hungry. Also, chaos have feelings. If you hit them or throw them, they will cry and be sad. If you pet them and hold them, run around with them in your hands and be around them, they will be happy and love you. Chaos also have alliances. If Robotnik raises them (in SA2B only) then the Chao will lean more towards the dark side, and if Sonic raises them, they will lean towards the light side. Okay, not for the big stuff.
REQUIREMENTS: There are some tools you will need in order to obtain a Chao that will be able to win the races. This is the list. -SADX & SA2B -If you are only raising for SADX, then just that game will do, but if you are trying to get an ultimate Chao you will need both SA2B and SADX. -Game Boy Advanced -This is to transfer your Chao copies over from each game. Having a Sonic Advanced game in it is not recommended because then a copy is not made, and if you screw up, you have nothing to fall back on. -GBA to GCB cable -Once again to connect your game boy advanced to your gamecube. -Stopwatch -In SA2B, it is very important to give equal amount of time to dark characters as light ones, so the Chao stays neutral. If the Chao becomes a dark Chao or hero Chao, it won’t be able to mate, and it won’t be able to participate in one of the two hero and dark races. Only a neutral Chao can race in both. -Pen and Paper -You will need to carefully plan out who is breeding with whom, and who is evolving to what.
PROCESS SUMMARY -Here’s a summary, I will explain each thing in more detail further on. First you get a group of Chao that you can evolve and mate together to get your ultimate Chao. You do this in SA2B (since it has the doctor). Take a separate Chao and make it a hero Chao (just so you have another garden). Put other Chao except the one you are working on in the hero garden. Transfer the Chao to SADX via Game Boy Advanced. In SADX, give the Chao animals on the area you want it to evolve (like running, or power), or just feed it if you want stamina. After its area is at around lvl 8 or has around 150 points, transfer it back to SA2B. There, with one character feed, and hold the Chao for 20 minutes (watch some TV in the mean time, use the stopwatch), then after switch to an opposite character (dark character) and do the same. Then just switch off, 20 minutes with hero character (just standing out of reach), and 20 minutes with dark character, feeding. After 4 hours or so it evolves. Put the Chao in hero garden take the next, do the same. Once done, put both in the regular garden, feed heart fruit and mate them together. Once baby is born, hatch, bring to doctor and see if results are what you expected (if not, then hit reset, do not exit or it will save). Then just repeat a bunch of times till you have your ultimate Chao. Bring over to SADX and get all stats to max (except maybe stamina), then race, bring to SA2B and race, and your done!
PLANNING YOUR CHAOS -Getting your ultimate Chao will probably mean starting with 6-8 chaos, and having to raise and mate, then raising the 3-4 babies, raising and mating, etc etc. The best thing to do is to plan it out. First, some rules of mating. 1: Mating 2 Chao with the same grade in an area (like both have an A in running) will NOT raise the grade, usually it actually drops it. (so A+A can’t get an S, and usually will end up being a B or C) 2: Grades do have a tendency to average out, not all the time but it’s a possibility (like A+C=B) 3: It is nearly impossible to mate a high grade and a low grade and still keep the high (like A+D usually won’t get you an A for the new baby) 4: For the most part, as long as they don’t differentiate a lot, grades are taken from the parents to give to the baby instead of making new ones. (so AACEC+CCABA could get you AAACA, but may take a lot of attempts to get there). 5: Grades are somewhat random, but as long as you don’t exit, you can hit the reset button and it won’t save the new Chao, so you can mate again until you get the desired results. 6: As a guide line, the lowest grade you can mix with an S and still get an S is C (C+S can equal S, just may take a lot of tries) 7: Hero or Dark chaos (immortal) cannot mate.
There are more, but this is the simple version. So here is an example of a Chao layout.
Study it a bit until you get how things work (it’s pretty easy).
Okay, let the detail begin!
GET YOUR CHAO READY!! -How do I get more Chao? Simple. First, transfer one Chao to your GBA, this will load on the temporary Chao garden. Take back your Chao, and you will have an empty garden in your game boy advance. Go to the shop menu on the game boy advanced, and for 0 coins you will see an egg. Drag it on, rub it 3 times to hatch it, then send it over to SA2B. Once it’s there, bring it to the doctor, and write its name and grades on a list. Do this many times till you have the Chao you think you can use to make your ultimate Chao, send the rest packing to the far off forest.
START RAISING! -Take one different Chao (not part of your plans) and make it a hero Chao so the hero garden will become available. Dump all but the Chao you want to raise first into the hero garden, leaving the Chao that is going to be evolved in the main area. Now, take that Chao, put it on the GBA, then shut off your game cube and put in SADX. NOTE!!! If you want to evolve the chao’s stamina, SKIP PAST TO “BRING IT HOME” SECTION!!! When there, bring the Chao from your GBA into the Station Square garden. Once there, move any other Chao in the garden to either the Mystic Ruins or the other garden (don’t do this first, because then an egg will appear). -Now that you got your Chao ready, it’s time to raise him. The reason why the Chao is brought to SADX is because it is the easiest place to focus on a specific area. There are 4 levels in the game that have attribute specific animals that you receive, I will list them here. -EmeraldCoast – 80% swim, 20%run -Speed Highway – 80% run, 20% fly -RedMountain – 80% power, 20% fly -Sky Deck - 80% fly, 20% power. So, all you need to do is to go to the level that has the stat you want to raise on your Chao. If you want to evolve in swim, then go to the emerald coast, for run go to speed highway, etc. I have video of the fastest run for each area which can be viewed below. Fly Run -When you have gotten the animals, go back to your Chao and give them to it, feed it, and pet it. Repeat until the Chao is about lvl 8 and has about 100-150 stat points. Do not raise any other stat on the Chao (except stamina) otherwise you run the risk of messing up the order. Once this is accomplished, put the Chao back into the GBA. Now, in a separate garden on SADX (I reserved one garden for this purpose) place your Chao in there, since he is a copy, and you can go back to him if something screws up with it on SA2B.
BRING IT HOME -Okay, once your Chao is back on SA2B, it will replace the old one (erasing it, since it was a copy). In order to ensure that the Chao evolves correctly, you will need to feed it 5 more animals. Here are the locations: Swim: Go to Aquatic Mine with Knuckles and jump into the water to the right. Dive straight down
to find a seal. It raises swim about 4 points and power about 1. One trip (10 animals) raises swim
about 4 levels, power 1 level. 5 seconds. Now, with Sonic, feed the Chao and hold it for 20 minutes (use the stopwatch). I just watched an episode of Sonic the Hedgehog to pass the time. After the 20 minutes is up, put the Chao down, go out and get Shadow, and feed and hold the Chao with him for 20 minutes. After this is done, switch to knuckles and go up above on the waterfall so the Chao cannot get to you (otherwise it may come to you to be held, and since you aren’t paying attention it will start to cry). After 20 minutes, switch to rouge and do the same, feeding it every 20 minutes and switching characters. It will take about 3-4 hours for it to evolve, so be patient. You can also track the progress of the Chao by it changing color and shape. A swim Chao will start to turn bluish and have a long back head, and may grow some horn looking things. A run Chao will turn dark blue, and develop about 3-4 points at the back of his head. Fly will develop NiGHTS style, with purple and two cone like ears. Power will turn red, and will get these horns.
ALMOST EVOLVED -Okay, the time is getting close and your Chao is about to evolve. Save by exiting, and then wait. Eventually it will go into an egg looking cocoon and evolve. Hopefully it will be the right evolution, IF IT IS NOT, DO NO PANIC!! Firstly, NEVER exit if it is wrong, this saves the game. Instead, hit the reset button on your console, this will ensure that no save is preformed. The most likely thing if it didn’t evolve right is it turned dark or hero. If this happens, all you need to do is quickly feed it some hero/dark fruit, and then love it with the right kind of character. If it was a hero, you need to feed it dark fruit and pet it a LOT with Robotnik. It IS possible to change a Chao even minutes before it evolves, because if you pet it, and as soon as your done petting it pet it again, it never gets a chance to evolve and you can continue to change it’s alliance till it is right. I had a Chao that I needed to turn dark, and it was a hero, and only like 2 minutes till it evolved. I managed to somehow feed it 6 dark fruit, and pet it for like 20 minutes, and finally it came out dark.
IT’S DONE, NOW WHAT? -Now, do the same with the next Chao, till you have the two you want to mate. If you want you can just do the two at a time, or do all of them and then mate all at once, it’s your choice.
MATING -Ah yes, even these little guys need someone to love (even if it is only for like 3 seconds). To get two Chao to mate, put them alone in the garden, and give each a heart fruit (bought from the Chao black market). When they both have eaten them, a ring of flowers will appear around them. As soon as this happens, EXIT. This will save the Chao right at the moment when they are ready to mate. Then, reenter, pick one Chao up and put it in the ring of flowers (and if it doesn’t work, pick up and put in again till it does). The Chao will stand up, jump and rub noses, then POOF, and Egg (yes, G rated reproduction to a tee). Pick and shake the egg till it hatches, then run the newly born Chao to the doctors, check the stats. If you like what you see, then place the Chao down and save it, if not, then PUSH THE RESET BUTTON, DO NOT EXIT. Exiting saves, reset doesn’t. Reset, go back, and mate the Chao again till you get the Chao of your dreams.
RE-BIRTH -This is another thing I should mention, if you have a Chao and you treat it well, after it dies it can come back with all of its letter grades still in tact (meaning a chance to evolve it once more). This is another method, but be warned, it takes about 16-20 hours for a Chao to die. So, if you have the time, okay. And don’t think about leaving the console on overnight, because your Chao will feel abandoned and may get hungry or sad, and may not rebirth after it dies.
I HAVE IT!!!...NOW WHAT? -Okay, you have your ultimate Chao. Now you just need to raise its states. Put it in the GBA, bring it over to SADX, and put it in the garden alone. It’s time to level up.
LEVELING YOUR CHAO -It’s pretty simple to do, go through the levels, get the animals, and give them to your Chao. There are, however, some tid bits that will end up saving you time and hassle. For me, I went in this order: Swim, Run, Power, Fly. The reason being is the location, this is the closest to farthest, and as you level up, the other stats will rise, meaning spend more time with the closest located stat, and less time running allll the way over to the farther away stat areas, like red mountain and sky deck. -Next tip is using the knowledge that your Chao can’t De-level to your advantage. When you take in some animals, they can sometimes decrease one of the other stats (like often swimming animals decrease fly). But, if your fly bar is already at 0, the stat cannot go any lower and you can feed without any worry of wasting bars. So in other words, order your animals. Start with the main attribute, then go to the neutral animals, and end with the other attributed animals. This is, unless, say you have only 1 more bar till you level up in the other attribute, then you would want to level up before you start taking off all those bars. It’s a bit complicated, so let me explain with this. Say you are raising power. You get 6 power animals, 2 neutral, and 2 flying from the level. Your Chao has 6 bars in fly, and none in power. I would use the 2 flying animals first to level up the fly first, since the power animals decrease fly and would take those 6 bars away. Next I would do neutrd then go onto power to al since it raises both (in case fly is near another lvl up), anfinish off. A big help to this is also using Chao Fruit. This fruit gives 1 bar to EVERY stat when the Chao takes a bite, meaning that if fly has 8/10 bars, and you have no more fly animals, feed it a Chao fruit till it levels up. Trust me, it works really well. -Lastly, just continue this till your chao’s stats are at lvl 99 for all of them except stamina. You can do stamina, but it will take a long time, and you risk having your Chao die and start all over from age. Lastly, race your Chao in SADX, then transfer over to SA2B and beat every race and karate.
HERO AND DARK RACE -These are the last races, and supposedly the hardest. The reason we need to keep the Chao neutral is because only a neutral Chao can race in both, otherwise only a hero can race in the hero race, and dark in the dark. To get this, you must raise one hero Chao and one dark Chao, then the races will open up. Beat them both, and you will have every emblem for the chaos, and a kick butt Chao to boot.
